Aromatherapy is a type of alternative medicine that can assist with all manner of ailments and health requirements, and is growing in popularity around the globe. Even if you’ve never indulged in aromatherapy as a standalone treatment, doubtless it will have entered your life in some way, shape or form. Simple shower gels, antiseptic creams and cough medicines often contain certain blends, oils or extracts which are designed to give the user the benefits of aromatic healing alongside the main function of the product.

What is aromatherapy?

Quite simply, aromatherapy is the process of using essential oils or other plant based compounds to improve the person’s mood or health. The delivery of the oils, blends, waxes or other materials can be done in a variety of forms, including massaging them into the skin, sleeping with a bag of them under your pillow or inhaling them directly via steam or a vaporizer.

How does it work?

There is much debate over the scientifically proven benefits of aromatherapy, and although several studies have proven that it certainly makes people feel better, there are still many who are sceptical about the ability of plant oils and blends to actually heal. In theory at least, these are the ways in which aromatherapy can help you:

  • Feel good on the inside: Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory system. This in turn stimulates the limbic system of the brain, and releases chemicals which make the person feel good, happy and relaxed.
  • Be well on the outside: Essential oils are said to have a pharmacological effect too, although the specific nature of this will depend on the blend you are using. Some types of essential oil are said to be antibacterial, and capable of destroying fungi and microbes.

You can get your aromatherapy products from a number of reputable suppliers. Look for specialist shops in the high street or search for suppliers on line. You may be able to get a prescription for a specific product depending on where you live, but if in doubt consult a qualified aromatherapist for advice and guidance.
